How A Heartburn Diet Can Reduce Your Symptoms And Make You Feel More Alive
Heartburn diet and lifestyle changes are one of the most fundamentally important changes you can make when it is obvious that you are suffering from an acid reflux condition. This is for a variety of reasons, not just the fact that a better lifestyle will make you feel healthier and give you more energy. If you are using antacid drugs to control the condition, you should find that you need fewer of them over time. Other drug treatments which can cause severe side effects may be needed in smaller doses because of the work you have done in reducing the amount of acid created by the stomach.
It is important not to see diet and lifestyle changes as an automatic cure all. In many situations, they can completely eradicate heartburn and related symptoms, but it is by no means guaranteed. In some cases, heartburn is just one of many symptoms of something far more serious, such as forms of heart disease. These will need constant medical attention once they have been properly diagnosed. There is often a tendency for those who believe in natural healing methods to shun the physician and take responsibility for their own health, but physicians still have highly effective diagnostic tools which should be used by anyone.
Getting a correct diagnosis in the first instance can make all the difference between being able to quickly eradicate the problem, and having to go back to the start having wasted months of your time, because the treatments you have been following were not appropriate for the condition. Even in the case of something as simple as diet, it is vital to understand the underlying condition so that the choices you make are the right ones. The most common cause of heartburn is gastro-esophageal reflux, and this is always treatable by improving the diet. If the reflux is caused by a chemical imbalance or damaged muscles, diet will not be enough to overcome it completely.
If the diagnosis has been made, and your heartburn is definitely caused by gastro-esophageal reflux, you can begin to make dietary changes which will be immediately beneficial. You can even use diet to control the immediate pain. Drinking a glass or pure cool water will help to dilute and neutralize the acid when it is being regurgitated through the upper body. Using a mixture of water and citrus fruit juice will be even better, as this will stimulate the body into producing an alkali to digest the fruit juice.
It does have to be pointed out, though, that this short term relief will not be as effective nor as quick as that which can be obtained from an antacid drug. In the early days of treating heartburn, you are probably better advised to use antacid drugs to control the pain while you put your dietary plan into place for the long term. If you need to treat the condition with drugs such as proton-pump inhibitors, you will not be able to continue to use antacids in any case, so the improvement to the condition gained through diet will still be invaluable.
The most important change of all is one which should be easy to make, and is one which will not involve you changing the actual type of food you eat. As heartburn is aggravated by the stomach muscles being stretched or pulled out of position, the eating of heavy meals and the bloating of the body is a major trigger factor. If you habitually eat three meals a day as so many people do, experiment with eating your food in smaller portions but more regularly. Start with five meals a day, and if that doesn't seem to make a major improvement switch to seven a day.
When you begin to plan your heartburn diet, there are two major factors to bear in mind. The first is to avoid anything which is a known trigger factor in your own case. This does not just have to be the usual suspects such as tobacco, alcohol, or an excess of saturated fat, it can be something as innocuous as a tomato. The second consideration is to base your diet upon foods which need an alkali to digest, rather than those which need acids. Keeping the body chemistry right will pay huge dividends.
Your heartburn diet should lead to steady and consistent improvement over time, so long as you are able to stick to it. There is no need to formulate a strict system where you are totally restricted as to what you eat, it is more a case of making sure that the food you do eat is right. Don't worry if you feel hungry and need a snack during the day, just make sure you reach for a piece of fruit or some sunflower seeds instead of candy bars or junk food. There is no need for extremes with a well planned heartburn diet.
