The most obvious example of a behavior which could impact negatively upon the unborn child is smoking, yet it is a far more complicated issue than simply telling someone to stop. Alcohol is another substance which needs to be kept to the absolute minimum, but again in many cases this is easier to say than it is to do. Spicy foods and those which contain excessive amounts of saturated fat should also be kept to the lowest possible level.

There will inevitably be cases which do not respond even to wholesale positive lifestyle changes. These will usually be cases where there is a fundamental problem with the muscle which protects the stomach. These cases can be managed by the use of drugs, or with surgery, but when the patient is pregnant there are obviously going to be extra considerations. Drug treatments are likely to be far less invasive and troublesome, but the doses need to be kept to a minimum. Even if the dietary changes did not eliminate the pain, they can still reduce the dose of the drug needed to keep it under control.

When heartburn and pregnancy are present together in the same body, there is always the worry that whatever is causing the heartburn may also be causing harm to the baby. It is extremely unlikely that this will be the case, as the acid which is causing the heartburn will start high in the stomach area and rise from there. There will be no effect on the nutrients which are passed in the opposite direction to the unborn baby.
